The 2012 unibody was in fact the most reliable MacBook Pro from the unibody generation. Even apples replacement program did nothing to fix the issue, because the replacement boards had the same unreliable GPU. The 2011 is extremely unreliable and notorious for the GPU issues which are non fixable, because the ATI chips were really bad. Any laptop that needs to go back to the manufacturer for $100s in repairs if even the smallest thing goes wrong with the keyboard is a laptop I will never buy. The BS membrane thing won’t suffice either. Never thought I’d say I’m done with Apple laptops after 20 years, but I may be if they don’t make some of this right. That stopped me dead in my tracks honestly. But the coup d’etat was probably the inclusion of a ridiculous keyboard redesign that severely compromised reliability and repairability. All of those were enough to make me pause before “upgrading” my 2014 model. The loss of the function key row and ESC key on a pro machine to make way for an emoji bar and sound slider was galling (was there not room for both if they insisted on this silliness? Really). The loss of MagSafe was confounding, arguably one of the most clever of Apple’s little hardware innovations. The loss of useful ports was painful as was the excessive CPU throttling to make the machine thinner, especially on a machine purportedly built for “pros”. In fact, I would prefer a 2015 Macbook Pro bought used over any of the failure prone versions as of late.

My 2013 rMBP 15 still handles like new and after its battery replacement I reckon it could last another 5 years. The screen, battery and harddrive are more expensive to replace than the generation before, but there is nothing prone to failure that wouldn't have failed already in this generation. In my opinion the newer ones have trade-offs that I can't stand, primarily the poor battery life at load, but also the several reliability issues that seem to be alike to an over-engineered German car. The rMBP is in my opinion the best laptop ever made. Sure, it's not as reliable as the Unibody generation that preceded it, if we count the 2011 MBP then that would take the reliability victory, but as for the newer Macbooks the problems present in the Retina generation such as the screen coating issues were all owned up by Apple and given a very long extended replacement program. It was the pinnacle of engineering, high performance with all day battery life that lasted 2 hours longer than listed. There was nothing on the market like it when it came out. The Retina 2012-2015 generation Macbook Pro.
